Messages of Condolence

• I will always remember Jon for his deep love for Heather and care and hard work for his family and children Jade and Nicholas. We once ended up in a German language exam together – quite unplanned. We were chosen to discuss together the subject of football. Of which I have absolutely no real knowledge or interest. Jon was very kind and we ended up have a conversation about football that was good enough to pass that section of the exam. It takes a courageous and determined personality to move to a new country and Jon showed that so much in his work and leisure activities. I’ll miss seeing your hiking pictures with Heather as you explored your adoptive country.

• In memory of Jon
  
  Jon was one of those people who made you feel he was genuinely interested in you. Not the usual “I’m fine, how are you?” — with Jon, he actually wanted to know how you were, and he would listen to the answer. He was generous, kind, intelligent and, above all, interested in people.
  
  He was also the only person who gave his best to properly pronunce my surname. Small achievement, but believe me, I was always impressed.
  
  I will also never forget his skiing helmet. It was enormous and resembled the head of a giant fly.
  
  One of my favourite memories is from the Hallenstadion in Zurich. Joanna and I had gone to a concert, and Jon and Heather happened to be there too. Neither couple knew the other would be there. And somehow, out of more than 10,000 seats, we ended up sitting next to each other.
  
  I was lucky to work with Jon in Switzerland for 2-3 years. He had a wonderful way of challenging you — never confrontational, but always with a sharp mind and a witty sense of humour.
  
  Perhaps that is what I will remember most about Jon. He was a very good person to have crossed paths with. I feel very lucky that I did.
  
  He will be missed – with our without that helmet.

• My finest memories of both Jon and Heather were firstly at the gym in Wilmslow which is where we first met sway back in the 1980’s. This transpired into them joining us on a skiing holiday in Switzerland of which there are many interesting stories attached. They were very happy times together with such fond memories that have kept us in touch with each other for so many years.

  I just like to say we celerbrated a wedding together, on the Sunday we had breakfast together, we drove Jon to the train. station, we all said our goodbyes.
  None of us knew this would be our last time we would see you.
  One minute James and I are ok, and the next we are in complete shock, paralyzed with grief, disbelieve, dismay, numbless, anger, confusion, and over whelming sadness. If we feel like that imagine how does his wife and his two children and their partners cope, when all their hearts are shattered into a million pieces?
  James and I are so grateful for the days we got to spend with Jon and Heather in their home. In a lovely part of the world, Switzerland. A place with numerous rivers, villages, and high peeks of the alps. Which are truely amazing.
  One thing i would like to ask you all to do, before you leave here today,hold each other a little longer as if you are saying goodbye.

  We raise a toast to Jon who liked the finer things in life, a very nice home, expensive cars, and only the best whiskeys, will ever do. He only settled for the best. Aloving and beautiful family love to you all gathered here today.

  What a shock. You’ve been taken away way too soon & you will be very sorely missed by everyone that was so fortunate to know you 😢
  
  One of our best moments, which still makes me chuckle, was back in June 2023. I went flying over the handle bars of my mountain bike, splitting my knee open & needing 9 stitches. Feeling miserable, strapped up & on crutches, Heather came over for moral support bringing a gift from you. A bag of jelly babies. Nothing unusual there, a bit of good old British comfort food…. Until the bag was opened that is & we discovered that every single jelly baby was missing a leg!! 😂
  We roared with laughter! So typical of you… a brilliant, but wicked sense of humour all the way.

• Jon was a remarkable man in so many ways and I still can’t quite fathom that such a force of nature can just suddenly be gone. These are the things I will always remember about him:
  
  Jon’s devotion to Heather and their children.
  Jon took his role as family fulcrum very seriously. It was always clear how much they meant to him. He once wrote that his aim was to “not merely deal with the issues of life, never flagging, always there – but also to do so with poise and grace, holding everything together for those around you, never missing a beat: because collapsing in a heap won’t help the people you love.”
  
  Jon was not just clever but also wise.
  Jon quoted Shakespeare, von Moltke, Hanlon and various other wise men spot-on, and he gave wise advice himself, always sensing when it was called for. “Remember, this isn’t a rehearsal” is one I won’t forget.
  
  Jon’s sense of humour.
  Jon once came to our building site to help knock some stuff down. I was travelling at the time but heard it had been rather harder than expected. A couple of days later he wrote: “The nice people at Cheyenne Mountain in America called today asking for their main nuclear bunker roof back, apparently the former owners of your place had borrowed it to use as a shower cubicle base. Oops. You will be happy to hear that I did get to demonstrate the delights of a decent cuppa to your man. Welcome to the Tea Side of the Force!”
